Not your average mountain day. A demanding overnight ascent of Tanzania’s active volcano, with sunrise revealing the Rift Valley, Lake Natron and the vast landscapes below.
Ol Doinyo Lengai is not a climb you choose because it is easy. Rising dramatically from the floor of the Great Rift Valley near Lake Natron, Tanzania’s active volcano is known to the Maasai as the “Mountain of God” and holds deep cultural significance for communities living around it.
The mountain is also geologically remarkable. Ol Doinyo Lengai is the world’s only known active volcano to erupt natrocarbonatite lava an unusually fluid, dark lava that changes colour as it cools and weathers. The result is a stark volcanic landscape unlike anywhere else on Tanzania’s northern circuit.
The ascent normally begins around midnight, when temperatures are cooler and the mountain is still wrapped in darkness. With your local mountain guide, you climb steadily over steep volcanic slopes and loose terrain, using a headlamp to navigate toward the crater rim. This is a physically demanding climb requiring good fitness, sure footing and determination particularly during the descent.
Reach the upper slopes around sunrise and the reason for the overnight effort becomes clear. On suitable weather conditions, views open across the Great Rift Valley, with Lake Natron and the surrounding plains stretching far below.
This is less about ticking off another summit and more about experiencing one of Tanzania’s most unusual landscapes – raw, remote and completely different from a conventional safari.
Begin around midnight and climb the steep volcanic slopes with a local mountain guide, aiming to reach the upper mountain around sunrise.
Take in expansive views across Lake Natron and the Great Rift Valley when weather and visibility allow.
Discover why Ol Doinyo Lengai — the “Mountain of God” - holds such importance within Maasai culture and tradition.
Experience the mountain’s stark ash slopes, unusual geology and rugged terrain shaped by ongoing volcanic activity.
After an early breakfast, depart Arusha for the long, scenic drive north into the Rift Valley toward Lake Natron, passing through increasingly remote Maasai rangeland as the terrain becomes drier and more dramatic. The lake itself, a shallow, highly alkaline soda lake, is a striking sight its red tinged water, caused by salt loving microorganisms, contrasts sharply against the volcanic backdrop of Ol Doinyo Lengai rising beyond it.
Arrive at your campsite or lodge near the lake by mid-afternoon, with time for a short exploratory walk to nearby waterfalls fed by natural springs, where flocks of lesser flamingo are often visible feeding along the lakeshore. Have an early dinner and rest in preparation for a midnight departure the climb begins in darkness to avoid the volcano’s punishing daytime heat.

Depart camp around midnight, climbing by headlamp up steep, loose volcanic ash and scree with no fixed trail a physically demanding ascent that requires careful footing and a steady pace throughout. As dawn approaches, reach the crater rim in time for sunrise over the Rift Valley, with the active crater itself visible below, its floor marked by hardened black and white lava formations from recent eruptions.
After time at the summit to take in the views and the volcano’s otherworldly crater floor, begin the steep descent, which moves considerably faster than the ascent thanks to the loose scree underfoot, arriving back at camp by mid morning.
